Tribes in our Classroom: Timberlea School follows The 4 Tribes agreements stated above and these agreement are the rules we follow in our classroom.
The stated mission of Tribes is: To assure the healthy development of every child so that each has the knowledge, skills and resiliency to be successful in a rapidly changing world.
The Tribes approach involves all members of the school community (i.e., teachers, students, and parents) being a part of mini-communities called tribes (tribes are made up of small groups of 4-6 members). The structure of these tribes provides energy and inclusion within any group of peers no matter the age, culture or stage of development. Appreciation for each person's uniqueness (race, culture, gender, abilities and contributions) is assured with the tribes by following the four agreements listed below:
TRIBES: The Four Agreements
In order to establish and maintain a positive environment in our classroom, we will be using the Tribes four community agreements. Agreements are the ways that we choose to be with one another. We will help each other honour them in our classroom and school.
Attentive Listening: Listening closely to everyone's ideas and feelings, thinking and understanding what everyone in the class has to say.
Appreciation /No Put-Downs: Treating each other kindly and thanking for each action that shows caring and love. / Avoiding negative remarks, name-calling, hurtful gestures and behaviours.
Right to Participate / Right to Pass: Having the right to choose when and to what extent each child will participate ingroup activities / Knowing that voluntary participation enhances learning (Note this does not apply to school tests and assignments).
Mutual Respect: Treating yourself and others with respect, recognizing and respecting the value and uniqueness of each person.
